Australians might soon have another streaming service to spend their money on as Max, formerly HBO Max, looks to expand into other markets.

HBO is behind some of the most successful TV shows in history, from The Sopranos to Succession, The White Lotus, even Games of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon.

Foxtel and Binge is housing HBO’s content, but that could soon change.

Warner Bros Discovery is Max’s parent company and its exclusive deal with Foxtel is about to end.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that instead of the deal being renewed, sources say come early 2025 Max could be in the Australian market.

Beyond just its original shows, Max, which is still referred to as HBO Max in Europe, has offerings from Warner Bros., Discovery Channel, CNN, Cartoon Network and Animal Planet.

Succession

HBO shows like Succession could soon have a new home in Australia.

The almost inevitable arrival of Max

Last week Jean-Briac Perrette, the global head of streaming and games at Warner Bros Discovery, noted that its content already does well in Australia and the UK.

“So the demand is there and there’s unquestionably easy access because, ultimately, we don’t have a huge amount of local originals we have to invest in,” he said according to the SMH.

Perrette also said Warner Bros Discovery was “leaving money on the table” with the licence deals it has.

It’s not the first time Perrette has hinted that Max intends on making its way to Australia.

In October, he said Australia was a “critically important market” for the company.

At the time he said Max would expand to Asia before 2025 and then a “market like Australia” after that, which implies in 2025 or after.

What would happen if Max comes to Australia?

There are already plenty of streaming services in the Australian market: Netflix, Disney+, Stan, Amazon, Apple and Binge.

If Max was to launch in Australia, you would assume its content would be removed from other streaming services.

All the HBO shows that can be streamed on Foxtel or Binge would then likely migrate to Max.

Some might rejoice at the idea of Max potentially coming to Australia, but others might be less impressed they may need to get yet another subscription to watch the content they want.

When it does come to Australian screens, it may provide consumers with the impetus they need to take stock of what streaming services they really need.
