Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are once again teaming up to appear in an iconic franchise film.

According to Variety, Robbie and Gosling, who recently starred in the record-breaking Barbie, will appear in the upcoming Ocean’s 11 prequel.

Josey McNamara, who will be producing the project, also worked on Barbie and remarked how Robbie and Gosling make a dynamic on-screen duo.

“They’re wonderful together. The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing,” he told GamesRadar at the premiere of movie Saltburn

The news comes just months after Greta Gerwig’s Barbie smashed box office records and left studio heads stunned. Robbie and Gosling played Barbie and Ken.

The flick had grossed over $1.3 billion ($A2.08 billion) at the box office as of late August and was competing against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Barbie was a global smash hit that left Warner Bros execs stunned.

There are already five films within the Ocean’s franchise.

The first, Ocean’s 11, came out in 1960 and starred Frank SinatraDean MartinSammy Davis Jr.Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop.

The next film, Ocean’s Eleven came out in 2001 and also had an ensemble cast, this one led by George Clooney.

The most recent film, Ocean’s Eight, was headed up by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carte.

What do we know about the prequel?

Very little is known about the prequel, other than the superstar duo will be starring in it, Austin Powers’ director Jay Roach will be directing and Carrie Solomon is writing the script.

Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, will have a hand in producing, alongside Roach and Michelle Graham.

According to Deadline, the film has been in development since last year and will be set in Europe in the 1960s, which Roach also confirmed when he spoke to the Associated Press’ film writer Lindsey Bahr.

On Twitter, Bahr revealed some of Roach’s quotes she omitted from the article, adding she hoped he gets the budget he needs for the film,

“The Monaco Grand Prix is the backdrop and there’s a big famous shipping magnate who has a yacht. It’s not inexpensive,” he said.

‘Old-fashioned epic love story’

“And I wanted it to be old-fashioned. Margot brought it to me as a kind of old-fashioned epic love story-slash-adventure disguised as a heist. It is a heist movie still, but it’s very much a love story.

“And we were both inspired by Hitchcock – To Catch a Thief but also Notorious. It just wants to be a big, big, you know, cinematic spectacle. We didn’t quite sync up yet on what the right budget for it is.”

In conversation with Bahr, Roach admitted there were some initial questions about whether it would be “weird” having Robbie and Gosling team up again after Barbie.

But I think there’s just some pairings you want to see over and over again,” he said.

“It’s such a powerful, powerful duo, you know? And it’s the suspense of ‘will they come together, will they trust each other enough to team up?’ That’s romantic!

Deadline revealed last year that Gosling was in talks to do the movie, with Warner Bros aiming to start production in spring this year before strikes by writers and actors impacted the project.

McNamara wouldn’t say too much more about the prequel, only that the aim is “to do right by the franchise”.
