A US supermarket chain is claiming to be behind a “genius” new creation which looks remarkably like a sausage roll.

Trader Joe’s supermarket last week unveiled its “puff dogs”, which takes the classic hot dog “to the next level” by wrapping it in flaky puff pastry.

But there’s just one problem – the fast-food was a British creation and has been an Aussie staple for decades.

The sausage roll is believed to have first originated from French and Hungarian conceptions of meat in pastry.

Brits have served a cold dish back to Trader Joe’s over social media.

“Not only is the name stupid, ‘puff dogs’, but the fact Americans think they invented this new snack is worse. It’s a sausage roll, jog on pet,” a woman wrote on Twitter.

“No, Trader Joe’s, you did not ‘invent’ the sausage roll. The British have been eating them for literally centuries,” another person said.

And another: “Dear USA, Sausage rolls have been around since the Romans. They literally predate your entire country by over a thousand years.”

In explaining its puff dogs, Trader Joe’s said it was hot dog season.

“Trader Joe’s Puff Dogs takes this classic dog-meets-dough pairing to the next level: each uncured, all-beef dog is instead swaddled in a perfectly flaky-when-cooked puff pastry. We don’t mean to hot dog here, but this marriage of beefy and buttery is pretty genius.”

A box of five would set US buyers back $6.49 ($A8.53).
