Driverless car gets pulled over by police

A vehicle has been pulled over by a police officer in California, with no one in the driver’s seat.

On closer inspection, it was revealed it was a Google self-driving car.

According to a post by Google+ the speed of the car was restricted to 25m/ph (40 km/h) for safety concerns, so it wouldn’t appear too intimidating.

“Driving too slowly? Bet humans don’t get pulled over for that too often,” said the post.

“Like this officer, people sometimes flag us down when they want to know more about our project. After 1.2 million miles of autonomous driving (that’s the human equivalent of 90 years of driving experience), we’re proud to say we’ve never been ticketed!”

The issue of culpability and driverless cars is still one of ambiguity, as Californian law currently stipulates a fine belongs to the individual in the driver’s seat.

Google has also stated they will cover the cost of tickets if one of its cars breaks the law.

Californian Police Division Mountain View Police Department said it was lawful for the car to be driving on that particular street, noting that the department frequently met with Google to ensure vehicles adhered to community safety standards.
