Flights in and out of Bali remain cancelled as a volcanic ash cloud hovers over Denpasar Airport, disrupting holiday plans for thousands of people.

Virgin Australia and Jetstar confirmed that all flights to and from Denpasar were cancelled, with the Indonesian airport closed on Friday afternoon for up to 12 hours.

But, Air Asia, Garuda, Singapore Airlines and other airlines flying out of Bali were still operating flights.

Prepare for vicious cold snap

Mount Raung in Indonesia erupted last Thursday, throwing travel plans in the busy school holiday period into chaos.

The ash cloud from an active volcano could continue erupting for several weeks.

Meanwhile, stranded travel makers planning to escape Australia’s chilly conditions will be disappointed to learn the most forceful cold front to move over south-east Australia in years will cause freezing conditions at the weekend.

The abnormally icy snap will begin on Saturday and keep the country chilled until the middle of next week, with temperatures in single digits or below zero, forecasters predicted.

South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland and the Northern Territory will endure their coldest temperatures in at least two years and more than five in some cities, Weatherzone told News Corp.

But snow bunnies will be rejoicing, with a dumping of snow expected to fall over the Australian Alpine region on Saturday, extending to the Great Dividing Range by Sunday.

NSW Bureau of Meteorology regional director, Barry Hanstrum, urged anyone planning outdoor activities or travelling during the school holidays, to keep a close eye on the forecasts and plan for the conditions.

Virgin said it had contacted all affected passengers and advised them to also check the website for more information.

Additional services between Australia and Denpasar are being added to the schedule in order to assist with guest recovery, the airline said in a statement.

Virgin said guests whose flights had been cancelled as a result of the volcanic activity will be able to change their booking to another date or alternative destination within 14 days without fee or receive a full travel credit by contacting our Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89 or +61 07 3295 2296.
