Modern fathers need to shake off the old stereotype of working long hours, being a handyman, and instead start helping with childcare, according to a survey for NetMums.

The website has a 15 point plan for modern dads, including number one: being a good role model and show a good man acts for both boys and girls, according to the survey of 1075 parents in the UK.

DIY comes in at 15th place behind cooking (11), helping kids with hobbies (6), and playing with kids (3).

Fathers contribute on average $34,257.88 a year in chores and childcare on top of their salary.

Nine out of ten families agreed that the male role in a family has changed over the last generation, the survey found.

Crucially, just 1.5 per cent of women said they wanted their male partners to be rich or climb the career ladder, while nine-in-ten dads thought bringing home the bacon was important.

“Modern mums want dads to ‘man down’ not ‘man up’,” said Netmums editor-in-chief Anne-Marie O’Leary.

“Being part of the family and fully involved is far more important than bringing home a hefty pay packet or looking gym-toned,” she told the Daily Mail.
