Proving Down Under is an emerging foodie’s paradise, three Australian restaurants were included in the list, with Sydney’s Sepia and Birrergurra’s Brae debuting at 84th and 87th respectively.

Sydney’s Quay restaurant also received a nod, rising two places to come in at 58th.

Run by former Royal Mail Hotel of Dunkeld chef Dan Hunter and his wife, Julianne Bagnato, Brae was awarded Restaurant of the Year in the 2015 edition of The Age Good Food Guide and given three chef hats.

The list, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, comes from a poll that includes international critics and insiders in the hospitality industry.

Geranium in Copenhagen, Denmark, took out the top spot for the back half of the list, coming in at number 51. It was followed by Tim Raue in Berlin and Hertog Jan in Bruges.

Apart from Brae and Sepia, there were nine other new appearances, including Canada’s first gong in five years with Joe Beef in Montreal and New Delhi’s Indian Accent becoming the first Indian restaurant on the list since 2012.

Madrid’s Diverxo also enjoyed a 35-place jump, moving from 94th to 59th.

The top half of the list will be revealed next Monday at an awards night in London.

Melbourne’s Attica came in at number 32 last year, so there is hope for at least one Australian restaurant in the top 50.
