Just days after it was announced that Freddo Frogs will be shrinking in size, it has been revealed that the iconic Caramello Koala chocolate snacks will also suffer the same fate.

But consumers will still pay the same price for both products.

The Cadbury treat will be trimmed from 20g to 15g, although the recommended retail price will not change – a measure that manufacturers are putting down to production cost pressures.

The next global food phenomenon is … toast?

A spokesperson for Mondolez International, which owns Cadbury, told the Herald Sun: “While we realise people won’t love the idea of pack sizes changing, these changes mean we can keep locally producing our famous treats at affordable prices.”

A standard Freddo Frog will weigh less (15g to 12g), as will a Jumbo Freddo and Caramello Bear (40g to 35g).

The cost-saving tactic also lowers the number of bars in snack size chocolate share-packs, including Freddos (20 to 15 bars) and Boost (16 to 12 bars), while Cherry Ripe, Picnic and Twirl bars in share packs will drop a few grams from each.

In late 2014 Nestle dropped the weight of their individual Killer Python lollies from 47 grams to 24 grams.

“It’s really important we ensure we’re still getting value for money,” Tom Godfrey from Choice told The New Daily at the time.

“If a company is going to downsize portions they need to downsize the price. The key thing to look for is the unit price so you can see how much of a product you’re actually getting.”

But the company cited health concern for the decrease, saying they did not want to serve that much sugar to their customers.

A dietician said in Nestle’s media release: “A 10-year-old can now run off a Killer Python in around 30 minutes. With the previous size, it would have taken almost an hour.”

There’s been a few sizing culls of late and even our greatest culinary icon wasn’t safe from downsizing due to “commercial pressures”.

That’s right, in September 2014 a jar of Vegemite went from 400 grams to 380 grams, but price stayed the same.

In 2009 Mondelez slashed the size of a block of Cadbury chocolate by 20 per cent, which they tried to disguise by switching from plastic to cardboard packaging.

What about the famous Big Mac? McDonald’s still maintain the burger is the same size as when it came to Australia in 1971, although many people contend that is not true.
