How a can of paint can transform your home

Homeowners can freshen up the interior of their properties without breaking the bank.

Metricon interior designer Kristina Carpenter says redesigning a property’s interior can be as simple as applying a new coat of paint.

First impressions count: how to design your home’s entry

“Redesigning the interior of your home is a lot easier than you think,’’ Ms Carpenter says.

“A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and quickest ways to transform the feel of a room.

“If you’re not fond of the idea of repainting, investing in a few new cushions or some complementary art work is the perfect way to express your personality in your home, while having the flexibility to easily change it.’’

But the interior designer warns there are some traps to avoid when revamping a home’s interior.

Here’s how to avoid repaint regret:

Keep hard surfaces neutral

When designing the interior of a new home, it’s vital to keep hard surfaces, such as those found in kitchens and bathrooms, neutral “so your home remains classic and adaptable’’, Ms Carpenter says.

“When it comes to styling the interior of your home, it’s crucial to keep the big ticket items and hard surfaces neutral and classic, and restrict trend pieces to soft furnishings, such as cushions,’’ she says.

Stay consistent

“With colours, it’s important to keep consistency in mind,” Ms Carpenter says.

“Carrying a similar colour theme throughout your home will make it feel cohesive and makes executing a particular style a lot easier.”

Monotone is best

Ms Carpenter explains that when it comes to colours, designers love the classic black and white contrast.

“We love pairing it with natural elements such as timber, marble, copper and concrete,’’ she says.

Use bright colours to highlight

“Subtle neon and pastel highlights perfectly complement monochrome tones and natural features,” Ms Carpenter suggests.

“The use of charcoal and black paint is a great way of using wall colour to make the room warm with a sense of depth.

“The Pantone Colour for 2015, Marsala, is another great accent colour to use if you prefer to steer clear of bright neons.”

Go trendy with furnishings

The Metricon spokeswoman says fittings and furnishings which are popular now include “a combination of natural elements and metallic features’’.

“Feature lighting, decorative vases and ornate accessories are the perfect way to bring these new stylish trends into your home,’’ she advises.
