First impressions count: perfecting your home’s entry

Looks aren’t everything but they are important, especially when it comes to your most prized possession – your home.

According to an interior designer with a major building company, you can create the right feel in your home the minute visitors pass through the front door.

Metricon’s Hannah Joosse says because visitors’ first impressions of your home are shaped by the entry way, it’s important that it’s styled well and that the exterior and interior colours complement each other.

Are we facing the death of the big Aussie backyard?

“First impressions are crucial because within a matter of seconds we form an opinion on how we think and feel about something,” Ms Joosse says.

“So it’s important that the moment someone steps into your home, they feel welcome and at ease.

“The moment you walk through the front door of a home, you get a sense of what the rest of the home is like. That’s why entry ways are such an important space.

“It needs to be a place that makes you feel happy to be home each time you walk through the front door.”

Streamline your surroundings

The designer says it’s crucial that there is not too much clutter in your entry area.

“Too much furniture or accessories will close the space in and make your home feel less inviting,” she says.

Have a focal point

Instead, install a statement artwork or a focal point.

“This is a simple and effortless way of making a great first impression,” Ms Joosse says.

The Metricon spokeswoman adds that feature walls “are a really easy way to make a good first impression”.

Choose functional pieces

Ms Joosse advises that furniture in the entry zone should be “minimal” and functional. A good example is a hallway table that offers a place to put your keys.

She adds that for smaller entry spaces, “mirrors and light colour selections are a great way to create a sense of spaciousness”.

“Not only is a mirror great for creating the illusion of space, it’s also great for last-minute outfit checks before running out the door in the morning,” Ms Joosse says.

The installation of a stylish rug is another way of adding some pizzazz to the entry.

“But it’s important to choose one with a heavy texture to withstand the heavy foot traffic,” Ms Joosse says.

Colour coordinate

Householders who want to redecorate their entry should consider their home’s internal colour scheme before doing so.

“You want the style of your home to carry cohesively through your home,” she says.
