Porsche has released its most powerful ever Cayman, powered by a 283kW engine that gives the car a record Nürburgring lap time of just 7:40.

Seen previously in spy shots, the potent new mid-engined coupe made its world debut at the Geneva motor show on March 3 and is set to go on sale in Australia from July, priced from $190,300.

That makes it more than $80,000 pricier than the standard Cayman 2.7 ($106,600), more than $50,000 pricier than the 239kW 3.4-litre Cayman S ($139,400), and within $20,000 of the cheapest 911.

The new model will sell in Australia for around $190,300 and up.

But the new GT4’s larger engine  from the 911 Carrera S is far more powerful than all of those models, allowing it sprint to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds.

The six-speed manual-only two-seater incorporates a host of upgrades including a 30mm lower ride height and dynamic gearbox mounts, helping it to lap the Nürburgring a whole 13 seconds quicker than the Cayman GTS.

The GT4’s wheels are significantly larger than previous models.

Fuel consumption is 10.3L/100km, thanks in part to a more aerodynamic body kit comprising more aggressive front and rear bumpers and prominent fixed rear wing, which together make it the first Cayman to generate downforce at both ends.

Naturally, the track-focussed Cayman also features larger wheels and brakes, full shell seats made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, a custom Sport Chrono Package with the unique Track Precision app and a Club Sport Package.

As standard, there are body-hugging sports seats trimmed in a combination of leather and Alcantara, among a number of GT4-specific interior additions.
