Ms Whittle says an “easy fix” is the placing of cushions or throw rugs on a tired couch.

“This will bring colour, texture and warmth to your home,” she says.

“Department stores stock a range of budget-friendly cushions, while some design boutiques and fashion chains sell bespoke prints and fabrics.”

The interior designer says floor rugs can “define your floor space and add a sense of cosiness”.

“Bright rugs work well in main living areas, especially if your layout is open plan, as it will differentiate this space from the dining and kitchen (zones),” Ms Whittle says.

Another useful tip involves taking coffee table or recipe books from your cupboards/shelves and stacking them on your kitchen bench or occasional table.

“This not only provides an instant reference point and inspiration, but also adds a feel of substance and visual interest,” Ms Whittle says.

And for those seeking to introduce more peace and serenity to their home, plants are great options.

“Greenery, plants and foliage soften hard lines and the green colour brings freshness and calm,” Ms Whittle says.

“There is a wide range of enamel and copper colour pots available in homeware stores which will further brighten your space and add colour.”

Cherished family photos and portraits can also be used in imaginative ways to add more character to a home.

“Framed photos of loved ones and occasions, either hung on the wall or propped on the side tables provide a sense of security and nostalgia, emphasising importance of the happy family moments,’’ Ms Whittle says.

“Try installing frames of a different style and size in a group as a feature on one wall.”

Ms Whittle says other items that may be gathering dust in storage could also boost a home’s interior.

“Simple objects of interest such as statues and sculptures provide softness and focal points,” she says.

“Don’t be afraid to display key pieces.’’
