Microsoft and Sony may have recently discharged their respective cannons in the console war, but Nintendo’s Wii U and Valve’s Steam Machine present themselves as compelling opponents, each with a unique set of interesting features.

Naturally, all this translates into a candy land of opportunity for game developers, who have pulled out plenty of stops to give us an impressive line-up of videogames for the next year. Here are The New Daily’s top 2014 game releases to look out for.

From the minds behind Gears of War: Judgement and Bulletstorm comes The Vanishing of Ethan Carter; a mystery adventure for fans of Alan Wake, Silent Hill and the tales of Edgar Allen Poe. Step into the shoes of occult detective, Paul Prospero, as you solve the mystery of missing boy, Ethan. The game developers advise it should ‘only be played at night.’

Game developer Bungie’s next assault on the world of ‘mythic science fiction,’ Destiny is a shared-world shooter with MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) elements, meaning players can enter an ‘always on’ game and interact with other players in the storyline. Regardless of how it plays out, the creators of Halo can’t do wrong.

Dark Souls II

While it may not be getting a next-gen release, Dark Souls II will still make the dance card of many hardcore action RPG fans. A non-sequel to the first instalment, this game abounds with gruesome bosses, punishing environments and a sadistic storyline. Worthy of a good stay-cation.

Actually the eighth in the series, Kingdom Hearts III sees the return of many of your favourite characters from the past (Sora, Riku, Donald Duck, King Mickey et al), locked in a battle with the forces of evil, all staged within the realms of Disney locales. It’s an old chestnut, but one that has proven itself popular over the game’s previous incarnations.

Indeed, it would be a very odd world without Abe. This new adventure, Oddworld: New ’n’ Tasty, let’s you explore the world of Oddysee in all the glory of real-time 3D. While being billed as a remake of the original, expect some tasty gameplay innovation, all courtesy of the power of next-gen consoles.

Even though it’s multiplayer only, we hear the sound of a new franchise being born.

With real-world cause and effect, consequences for your actions and NPCs with emotional qualities, this next version of the popular Role Playing Game may be one of 2014’s best stories. Early reports are the bugs from The Sims 3 have been ironed out, so prepare for weekends full of immersive RPG fun.

Return to Tamriel as you fight to bring down a Dardric Prince, who’s basically hell-bent on wrecking the place.

Master horror storyteller, Shinji Mikami (creator of Resident Evil), has crafted a horror tale many are already anticipating as the next benchmark for the genre. If the horrifically gory trailers are anything to go by, this game is a blood-drenched, suspense-filled ride into the abyss of pure terror. Definitely not one for the kids.

Regardless of the quality of the game itself, Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 4 will sell by the truckload. Indeed, so popular was the previous instalment, is was actually been stolen by the truckload.
