The seventh season of Game of Thrones is almost upon us, and the latest trailer released Thursday morning (AEST) offers a riveting glimpse into the much-anticipated mayhem ahead.

Practically every major character, and some you may have forgotten, feature in the preview as “total war” finally overtakes the Seven Kingdoms and winter well and truly arrives.

But despite the bigger war against the creatures behind the wall, there are some more “petty battles” to be played out was the tussle for the iron throne comes to a head.

As Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish whispers the words; “Fight every battle, everywhere, always, in your mind,” and Sansa Stark is shown on screen stalking through a autumnal landscape, it appears the eldest Stark daughter has decided to stray from her half brother (or is he?) Jon Snow and his watch in the north.

Snow appears dressed as a Wildling alongside new sidekick Davos Seaworth in the face of the northern menace as his voice can be heard warning: “For centuries our families fought together, against their common enemy, despite their difference, together. We need to do the same if we’re going to survive.”

While we don’t know how long they’ll last, all the major players are featured in the trailer with Jaime Lannister, his sister/lover Cersei Lannister, Arya Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Theon Greyjoy, Grey Worm, Sandor “The Hound” Clegane and Brienne of Tarth depicted in various locations and battles around the Seven Kingdoms.

Even the evil Uncle Euron Greyjoy turns up out of the Iron Isles.

The sixth season ended with a massive armada helmed by Daenerys “Mother of Dragons” Targaryen heading toward Westeros and with Cersei assuming warrior queen hairdo and outfit.

As their inevitable battle approaches, Daenerys is seen taking the throne at what we assume is Dragonstone, the ancestral seat of House Targaryen.

Perhaps the most intriguing image from the season seven preview is that of the “immortal” knight Beric Dondarrion of Brotherhood Without Banners taking a fighting stance in the snow and igniting his legendary flaming sword.

As the trailer closes, Sansa can be heard saying: “When the snows fall, and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies. But the pack survives” as an unknown, apparently injured rider (Jon Snow?) trots through the frame.

Game of Thrones returns for the seventh season on July 17 AEST.
