The 11-day Cannes Film Festival is a veritable feast of fresh-off-the-runway couture, where celebrities daringly push the style envelope.

The past week has seen stars sporting sheer gowns, plunging cleavage, bare bottoms and priceless diamonds, strolling down red carpets like they’re walking down the supermarket aisle.

But it has all been high-voltage glamour. There have been a handful of notable missteps – some expected (ahem, Paris Hilton) and others more surprising.

Here’s a breakdown of who wore what on the French Riviera – who flew, who flopped.

Best dressed

Sara Sampaio: The Portuguese model appeared covered up in the front, but flashed some major cheek (the rear kind) with a completely sheer back. Regardless, she looked polished and confident – more style pioneer than wardrobe malfunction.

The cast of The Beguiled: The stars of the upcoming American Civil War thriller made a captivating crew on the red carpet. There was (from left) the adorable Addison Riecke in gold, Elle Fanning in lilac tulle, Kirsten Dunst in pastel blue, Sofia Coppola in classic black, Colin Farrell in a tuxedo, 16-year-old Australian actress Angourie Rice in pink and Nicole Kidman in a fringed column gown.

Kendall Jenner: On anyone else this would look like an artfully tied bed sheet. On a 21-year-old supermodel, it looks like a masterpiece.

Jessica Chastain: Whoever said redheads shouldn’t match their hair to their gown was completely wrong. The redheaded actress had major wow factor in this structured Armani Privé number.

Elsa Hosk: The Swedish model had a major Cinderella moment in this stunning Alberta Ferretti gown.

Charlize Theron: Unsurprisingly, the queen of the red carpet once again triumphed in a gauzy gown from Dior.

Worst dressed

Emily Ratajkowski: Just because you’re a perfectly proportioned swimsuit model who can wear anything, doesn’t mean you should immediately opt for a lace jumpsuit with keyhole cleavage cut-out and frilled train. That goes for anyone out there thinking of doing the same.

Jessica Chastain: While Chastain might have made it onto the best-dressed list above, that doesn’t save her from also featuring on the worst-dressed list for this bizarre green get-up. Kermit the Frog called – he wants his Sunday best back.

Paris Hilton: In her defence, Paris has never claimed to be chic. Her modus operandi is more ‘shock and awe’ than ‘style and grace’. It appears her latest boyfriend, DJ Chris Zylka, shares this approach, particularly when it comes to footwear.

Mischa Barton: We’re not sure what’s so offensive about this – the unflattering shade of peach? The strange boy shorts under the skirt? The unnecessary hip frills? Whatever it is, it’s not working for Mischa.

Salma Hayek: We’re not quite sure if Mexican-American actress’s Gucci dress is just a really fancy school uniform.
