Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is renowned for her chameleon-like transformations for films, but her latest look might be her edgiest yet.
The 47-year-old has had a raunchy makeover for a new short film titled Red, set to debut at the Adelaide Festival in January 2017.
In a newly released trailer for the film, written and directed by acclaimed Australian artist Del Kathryn Barton, Blanchett can be seen crawling and writhing on the floor in a fishnet body suit.
In one scene, a tuxedo-clad Blanchett wrestles a man to the ground.
According to Barton, the actress’s brief was to channel a female redback spider.
“The core idea of the film is sexual cannibalism,” Barton told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“Only two animals in the world actively assist the female to cannibalise them after mating. The redback does it by somersaulting over the female’s mouth and offering himself to her to eat.
“It’s an extraordinarily brutal and poetic scenario.”
Leave it to Blanchett to pull off the challenging task of emulating an cannibalistic insect.
After all, this is the same woman who miraculously transformed into music legend Bob Dylan in the 2007 biopic I’m Not There.

The Australian actress’s style has also received a rock-and-roll makeover on the set of her new movie Ocean’s Eight, the all-female version of hit 2001 heist film Ocean’s Eleven.

Rocking a platinum blonde shag haircut, leather pants, aviators and animal print, Blanchett looks more like Joan Jett or Debbie Harry than the polished, glamorous movie star we’re used to.

The movie is currently filming in New York, starring Blanchett alongside other major names like Sandra Bullock, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson and Helena Bonham Carter.
Ocean’s Eight has only been in production for three weeks but already Blanchett has been photographed in four separate retro looks, including a leopard print coat, flared black pants, black leather trousers and a bomber jacket.
Blanchett’s character description is not yet known, but it’s clear whoever she is, she enjoys a good velvet suit.
