We’re used to seeing them in costume as our favourite characters, but the stars of the small screen know how to amp up the glamour when the red carpet beckons.

Familiar faces from some of 2016’s hottest shows – Game of Thrones, American Horror Story and Stranger Things – attended the 68th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles looking completely different from their on-screen alter egos.

This year, it was the Game of Thrones ladies who made the biggest splash in slinky couture, but they were very nearly outshone by the three child stars of Stranger Things on Netflix.

Unfortunately for some, however, certain style risks failed to pay off.

Here are The New Daily‘s picks for best and worst dressed.

Best dressed

Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell: Put simply, Kristen Bell’s flowery Zuhair Murad gown is gorgeous. She knows it too – hence why she kept her hair and makeup fresh and subtle to ensure her stunning gown took centre stage.

Jane Krakowski

Jane KrakowskiHaving played plenty of hilarious characters on the small screen (she’s starred in 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to name a few), it’s clear Krakowski knows how to have a good time. This blue number was no exception – we loved the gorgeous embellishment, accessorised with playful strappy heels, a cool belt and Krakowski’s cheeky smile.

The Stranger Things kids: How refreshing it is to see kids looking like kids. The young acting prodigies stole the show from their older co-stars in the popular Netflix series and they did the same on the red carpet.

From Gaten Matarazzo’s (left) checked waistcoat, to Caleb McLaughlin’s (centre) adorable faux-serious pose, to Millie Bobby Brown’s (right) cute eponymous clutch – these kids are cooler than cool.

Emilia Clarke

Emilia Clarke: Known for her goofball antics and self-deprecating sense of humour, it’s rare we get to see the Mother of Dragons so, well, regal. The Game of Thrones star oozed unabashed sex appeal in this form-fitting nude Atelier Versace gown. All hail Khaleesi.

Sophie Turner: Just as her television alter ago Sansa Stark came into her own during Game of Thrones season six, 20-year-old Turner has found her red carpet mojo. With her brand new blonde hair in a loose braid, Turner rocked this simple but elegant Valentino lace gown with confidence. There’s a good reason she’s the Queen of the North.

Worst dressed

Anna Chlumsky: There are simply no words for this bizarre get up, which is as close to Grandma’s curtains as you can get. Chlumsky looks gorgeous from the neck up, but from the neck down it’s a disaster of Veep-level proportions.

Michelle Dockery

Michelle Dockery: Given the Downton Abbey star usually gets it oh-so-right, it’s particularly affronting when she gets it wrong. This strange black-and-white number felt dated and overly frou frou.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski: The stunning model clearly got lost on her way to next year’s Met Gala – her Zac Posen gown was over-the-top and a far cry from the understated elegance she usually goes for. Severe hair and makeup didn’t help her case.

Robin Wright

Robin Wright: Known for her chic skirt suits on House of Cards, one of the most beautiful women on television managed to look like a random reality TV star in this ill-fitting, garish glitter-fest. Leave it to Mariah Carey, Mrs Underwood.

Amy Poehler: Oh Amy. We love you so, but this green monstrosity was a bad choice. The silhouette weighed the funny lady’s tiny frame down and that particular shade of green reminds us of pond sludge.
