Jessica Mauboy could follow Flume’s path

Flume’s ARIA Award haul continues to grow with three more to add to the four he won in 2013, and a further eight up for grabs at the main ceremony next month.

Flume took home the awards for this year’s Producer Of The Year (for the second time) Engineer Of The Year (with Eric Dubowsky) and Best Cover Art (Jonathan Zawada) for his number one album Skin, announced at an early ARIA nominations event in Sydney on Wednesday.

It’s clear from Flume’s nods and from the nominations also totted up for Aussie musicians Troye Sivan (seven) and Illy (six) that electronica is seeping into the mainstream.

One decidedly pop artist who is really taking that on board is Jessica Mauboy.

The darling of Australian music admits she’s thinking about shaking things up and going down the electronic music avenue.

“I would love to incorporate it into my music. I have tried a little bit. My second record that I was writing was a little bit like that. I’d love to flow through that,” Mauboy told AAP at the ARIA Awards nomination event in Sydney.

She’s about to put out an album featuring a host of Australian classic rock covers alongside some originals as a soundtrack to her new TV show The Secret Daughter.

But her next album could incorporate electronic music and she even has some potential collaborators in her sights.

“We have incredible songwriters and producers who do drive down that lane and I’d love to hook up with them. Some of them are here today and if it’s a possibility then why not? she said.

It’s a strategy that’s worked out incredibly well for pop artists such as Justin Bieber who teamed up with producers Skrillex and Diplo to give his last album, Purpose, a more modern sound.

Mauboy thinks there are some Australian musicians who she could potentially team with to create a new electronic sound.

“I would love to link up with Illy … our connection with music would definitely happen. Hilltop Hoods are big friends of mine and I’d love to do something with them. I think they’re top,” she said.

“There’s so many names that are kind of just flowing out there and I definitely want to be a part of that.”

Flume adds to ARIA haul

As the ARIA Artisan Awards were announced on Wednesday, Flume brought his ARIA awards haul to a total of seven in his career so far.

He beat off stiff competition from electronic music godfathers The Avalanches, who were also nominated in the three categories.

Flume was also revealed as the most nominated artist at the upcoming awards with another eight in his sights at the main awards next month including Album of the Year and Best Male Artist.

In a video message from the US, Flume revealed he will be performing at the awards ceremony next month.

“It’s really nice to be recognised as producer especially among all these peers it’s an important one for me,” Flume said in his video message.

“We are in America at the moment on a tour but I am going to be performing at the ARIAs so I will see you at the big event.”
