Australian trio Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton have suffered setbacks to their Oscar campaigns after crashing at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

The ceremony confirmed musical La La Land as the potential force at February’s Academy Awards.

Gibson was up for best director and his Australian-made war drama Hacksaw Ridge for best picture, with both needing wins to boost their flagging Oscar campaigns, but both fell to La La Land.

La La Land‘s Damien Chazelle was victorious in the directing and original screenplay categories while the musical took best picture.

Kidman, up for supporting actress in another Australian drama, Lion, was trumped by Viola Davis for Fences.

Casey Affleck, for Manchester by the Sea, also confirmed his place as the Oscar best actor favourite by collecting the Critics’ Choice gong ahead of Edgerton’s performance in Loving.

Natalie Portman, for her portrayal of former US First Lady Jackie Kennedy in the biopic Jackie inflicted a major upset when she was named best actress ahead of La La Land‘s Emma Stone.

The Critics’ Choice Awards, judged by more than 300 US and Canadian critics from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, did hand Hacksaw Ridge best action movie.

Hacksaw Ridge‘s US-born, English-raised Andrew Garfield also won best action movie actor.

Lion‘s Dev Patel was also overlooked for supporting actor, with Moonlight‘s Mahershala Ali the winner.

Australian actress Margot Robbie grabbed a best actress in an action movie award for her performance in Suicide Squad.

Gibson, Kidman and Edgerton will need nominations at Monday’s (Tuesday 0015 AEDT) Golden Globes nomination ceremony to resuscitate their campaigns ahead of January’s announcement of Oscar nominees.
