In keeping with Hollywood’s passion for remakes and reboots, ’90s television hit Baywatch has been made into a movie, and the action-packed trailer has hit the internet.

Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron, the remake has kept the classic red swimsuits (although with a modern update) but ditched all original cast members and added special effects and a hip-hop soundtrack.

Of course, it also features some good old-fashioned running in slow motion.

Johnson plays the stoic leader of the Baywatch lifeguard team who must contend with a handsome, but arrogant, new arrival (played by Efron), brought in to reinvigorate “the Baywatch brand”.

Up-and-coming actresses Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach and Ilfenesh Hadera also star as the requisite beach babes, occupying the roles Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra and Traci Bingham made famous.

First reactions to the trailer on social media have been mostly positive, with many saying the film looks hilarious, with many offering particular praise for Efron’s abs.

The original Baywatch first aired in 1989 and ran for 11 seasons, becoming an enduring classic thanks to its cheesy plots and good-looking cast.

The film version is slated for release in May 2017.

Warning: Trailer contains coarse language.
