Actress Charmian Carr, best known for her role as the eldest Von Trapp daughter, Liesl, in the Academy Award-winning film The Sound of Music, has died at the age of 73.

Carr is especially remembered singing the beloved duet, Sixteen Going On Seventeen, with Daniel Truhitte in the famous “Leisl and Rolf” gazebo.

Carr’s death, from complications related to dementia, was announced in a statement online by the manager of her website, Steve Hughes.

“Me and my family are so sad to have to post this message and will miss her dearly … She was such a nice, cheerful person,” the statement read.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein company — founded by the pair behind the songs of The Sound of Music — also paid tribute to Carr.

“It’s always sad when a member of the family passes away — and in the case of the ‘family’ of the movie The Sound of Music, it’s especially sad when it is the first of the group to go,” the company said in a statement.

“Charmian Carr played the oldest Von Trapp child, and in some ways she maintained that role in real life — guiding, cheering, supporting and generally being there for the rest of her ‘sisters’ and ‘brothers’.”

‘I am Charmian, but I’m Liesl too’

Carr was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1942, the daughter of Rita Oehmen, a vaudeville actress, and Brian Farnon, a musician and orchestra leader.

Carr was 21 when she starred in The Sound of Music, and went on to star opposite Anthony Perkins in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Evening Primrose.

After leaving the film business to raise her children, Carr started a design business — and her clients included Michael Jackson, who was a huge fan of The Sound of Music.

Carr and the other actors who played the Von Trapp children kept in touch over the years, and she hosted and appeared in The Sound of Music sing-a-longs in the US.

In 2000, she told the Austin Chronicle that, as time passed and The Sound of Music retained its popularity, she “finally accepted the fact that I am Charmian, but I’m Liesl too”.

“At the 25th anniversary, I realized that The Sound of Music will be going on forever and ever, and that I will be forever Liesl in the public eye,” she said.

Kym Karath, who played the youngest of the Von Trapp children, Gretl, tweeted: “[Carr] has been like a sister throughout my life. Excruciating.”
