The show, which debuted to a chorus of high praise on social media, scored a national audience of 452,000 on ABC TV – a respectable but not particularly high number.

The show is also available on ABC’s streaming service iView, which may boost its viewer numbers across the weekend.

Cleverman‘s pilot simultaneously screened in the United States on cable television channel SundanceTV.

On Thursday it was announced ABC TV and SundanceTV would be commissioning a second season of the six-part drama, which follows two estranged brothers forced to fight for survival in a dystopian world.

“The world that Ryan Griffen and the rest of the team behind Cleverman have created is a perfect blend of timeless mythology seen through the prism of a near future lens,” Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV, said.

“This is a series that sophisticated genre fans will no doubt fall in love with.”

Indeed, feedback for the show was overwhelmingly positive, with many people on Twitter celebrating the arrival of an Australian drama with high quality production and a majority Indigenous cast.

Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen (aka Ser Jorah Mormont) also stars as media mogul Jarrod Slade.

Cleverman airs on ABC, Tuesdays at 9.30pm. The first episode is available to stream on iView.
