Two months out from its release, the Ghostbusters reboot has become the most disliked film trailer in YouTube history.

More than 600,000 people registered their disapproval of the film, which stars an all-female cast, compared with 200,000 who gave the trailer a thumbs-up rating.

By comparison, last year’s Peter Pan reboot, Pan – a critical and commercial flop by all accounts – received just 1300 dislikes and 15,000 likes. That’s a positive ratio of 1:15, as opposed to Ghostbusters‘ negative ratio of 2:1.

The results catapulted the trailer into the top 100 most-disliked YouTube clips of all time, which is unsurprisingly headed up by the platform’s most-viewed videos, such as Justin Bieber’s Baby film clip and Psy’s Gangnam Style.

Right at the top, Bieber clocked up over six million dislikes for Baby, but with 4.45 million likes, his ratio is a lot better than that of Ghostbusters.

The new Ghostbusters film, directed by Paul Feig, is also the first movie trailer to make the list. Most spots are taken by pop songs (Miley Cyrus has two entries in the top 10).

‘This is what political correctness looks like’

While some have questioned whether the number of people disliking the YouTube trailer is in fact being boosted by ‘bots’ (online robots programmed by humans), the comments section below the film shows just how strongly many viewers – mostly men – feel about the all-female remake.

“I felt physical pain when I watched this trailer. Can I sue Sony for assault in 2nd degree?” one commenter asked.

“This is what political correctness looks like in movies,” another wrote.

Many of the commenters were angered by the fact that four women replaced the original all-male cast. Others claimed gender wasn’t the problem: the lack of humour was.

“Every single woman I know hates this trailer,” wrote a user.

“Guys, people aren’t complaining because of female leads, we’re complaining because the female leads are in a movie that A. Isn’t funny B. Has cheesily animated ghosts,” argued another.

“It looks awful … but women are genuinely not funny.”

Many viewers were clearly sick of Hollywood’s seemingly endless stream of movie ‘reboots’ – calling out the apparent lack of originality.

“Next thing you know, they’ll be making remakes of Pulp Fiction, Dazed and Confused or Good Fellas,” wrote one commenter.

It was also obvious a number of commenters were returning to the video to keep an eye on the ballooning dislikes-to-likes ratio.

“Back here to check the dislike bar. Congrats everybody we finally got to 500k :),” wrote one user, while another encouraged: “Let’s get to a million boys!”

The Ghostbusters reboot will be released at Australian cinemas on July 14.
