Madonna’s onstage meltdown in Melbourne

Madonna delivered a memorable performance on Saturday night at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, making several bizarre, expletive-laden announcements in between performing her many hits.

“Thank you for your patience, you’ve waited over 20 years. What the f**k is wrong with me?” she said as she took the stage to kick off her first Australian tour since 1993.

Appearing as part of her Rebel Heart world tour, the Material Girl made reference to her messy divorce with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, with whom she is locked in a bitter custody battle for their son Rocco, 15.

“Someone please f**k me. Someone please take care of me, please,” the singer said. “Who is going to take care of me?”

Madonna apologised for her chaotic Tears of a Clown show at the Forum theatre earlier in the week, for which she was four hours late.

“I only had two days to rehearse — I’m gonna do it better next time, I promise,” she told the crowd.

The singer also paid emotional tribute to Australian icon Molly Meldrum, who was front row at the Melbourne show.

She dedicated her song ‘Take a Bow’ to the ailing Countdown host, saying “you’re the best” and crediting him with being “the first man in Australia to fall in love with me”.

She then handed the microphone to Meldrum, who happily pronounced, “I f***ing love you!”.

“I love you too. You take care of yourself, you hear me?” Madonna responded.

While Madonna’s frequent swigs from an apparent hip flask might have explained her unusual proclamations, Meldrum later told news.com.au the flask only contained water – a classic trick of the trade.

Madonna has been surprisingly candid at her Australian performances so far, opening up to fans about her custody battle with Ritchie at the Tears of a Clown concert last week.

“There’s no end to the mistakes I’ve made,” she told the crowd before dedicating her song ‘Intervention’ to her teenage son.

“Everybody knows the saga of me and my son Rocco. It’s not a fun story to tell or think about.

“I probably could have enjoyed myself a little bit more on this tour if he hadn’t disappeared so suddenly, and also if I knew when I would see him again. I want to dedicate this next song to him, to Rocco.”

Her next performances will be in Brisbane on March 16 and 17, followed by Sydney on March 19 and 20.
