At the Oscars there are two kinds of winners: those who take home a gold trophy and those who take home the title of red carpet style icon.

With millions of eyes on them, Hollywood’s biggest stars are under immense pressure to deliver the gown sartorial dreams are made of.

Host Chris Rock joked that the “ask her more” movement – which encourages hosts to ask female attendees about more than their clothes – was irrelevant unless the man tried harder in the style stakes.

“You’re not allowed to ask women what they are wearing any more. You have to ask her more,” Rock said.

“Now, you know, do you ask the men more?

“They ask the men more because the men are all wearing the same outfits. Every guy there is wearing the exact same thing. You know, if George Clooney showed up with a lime green tux on and a swan coming out of his a**, somebody would go ‘What you wearing George?’.”

On that note, here are the stars who stood out for all the right and wrong reasons.

Best dressed

Alicia Vikander: The Swedish Best Supporting Actress nominee was one of the first to arrive on the red carpet and she immediately won hearts for her choice of this lemon-hued Louis Vuitton number. Fun, flirty and a breath of fresh air.

Margot Robbie: The Aussie stunner could wear the outfit Chris Rock described above and still look a million bucks, but she still deserves kudos for this gold Diane von Furstenberg number. The undone hair was a little too casual, but who cares with a dress like that? Extra points for the tasselled clutch.

Olivia Munn: In terms of colour and cut, this one-shoulder Stella McCartney gown was perfect. Munn’s matching lipstick could have been a big miss, but with her gorgeous skin tone and simple up-do, it was a hit.

Eddie Redmayne: A former model, Redmayne knows how to rock a tux. This Alexander McQueen number in black velvet was perfectly tailored and appropriately formal for the occasion. Redmayne’s jaunty confidence and matching velvet shoes finished the look off.

And the winner is…

Cate Blanchett: This incredibly intricate Armani gown was the red carpet winner. On Cate’s statuesque figure, the overwhelming embellishment looked like an artwork and her flawless hair and makeup just made it all the more mesmerising. No one else could have pulled this off without looking like Elsa from Frozen (in a bad way) and for that reason alone Cate takes the cake.

Worst dressed

Heidi Klum: Purple was a popular colour on the red carpet (see Tina Fey and Reese Witherspoon here) and a difficult one to pull off. In draped chiffon with over-the-top flowers, the colour overwhelmed Klum’s supermodel figure and made her look drab.

Kerry Washington: Washington’s red carpet style is usually impressive, so this bizarre Versace gown was a blight on an otherwise spotless record. We’ll forgive her, just this once.

Jared Leto: There are very few words that can adequately convey the level to which Jared Leto’s Gucci suit missed the mark.

Kate Winslet: Kate Winslet isn’t usually one to take risks, so it’s unfortunate that the one time she decides to step out of the box it’s straight into this Ralph Lauren garbage bag.

Isla Fisher: Aussie Isla is an undeniable beauty with comedy chops to rival that of her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen. However this dated, curtain-like frock washed her out and stole attention away from her pretty makeup and hair.
