Sunrise host Samantha Armytage has hit back at ‘bullies’ after a mis-aimed skit saw her criticised last week.

Former Sex and the City star Kirsten Davis was on Sunrise promoting her work with the UNHCR and refugees when things went south.

Despite her requesting all questions relate to her humanitarian work, Armytage surprised Davis by asking her to join in on a mock Sex and the City scene with a number of other women dressed up as the main characters.

“You know ladies, I don’t know if that was the best idea,” suggested Davis after the painful skit had finished.

“You’re very brave. I give you kudos for bravery,” she finished diplomatically.

However, Davis later took to Twitter to voice her anger at the skit, as did others who had watched.

One week on, Armytage has hit out at the criticism dished to her in the days proceeding the skit, and especially at a column by journalist Virginia Haussegger.

“What the hell is wrong with those daft women on commercial breakfast TV! Why are they winding up the ditzy dial? And why are they so dead keen to present themselves as mindless bimbos?” Haussegger asked in a scathing Fairfax article.

“But seriously, what on earth is going on in Samantha Armytage’s head? Not much it would seem, given the pitiful episode she and her gal pals put actress Kristin Davis through on Sunrise on Thursday. It was gender-cringe TV at its worst,” she went on to say.

In an article for News.com.au, Armytage asked why “some of those who shout the loudest about feminism are the most unkind to other women?”

“To use petty barbs such as ‘bimbo’, ‘dumb’, ‘ditzy’, ‘daft’ to prove a point, does not make you a feminist,” she wrote.

“It makes you a bully.

“I don’t take myself too seriously, however I’m very conscious of my position as a role model for some women.

“I get on with the job. And I give back as much as I can. I’m not perfect, but I am most certainly not a ‘mindless bimbo’.

In the fallout following the skit, Armytage was axed as the MC of an UNHCR lunch, where she was to interview Davis again.
