New streaming service to fight Netfix, Foxtel in Australia

A new streaming service is coming to Australia, designed to cater specifically to reality TV fanatics.

American company NBCUniversal International announced on Friday it would launch streaming service Hayu in March, providing round-the-clock access to reality shows such as Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Real Housewives.

According to a statement, the service will offer the majority of its shows on the same day they air in America – an appealing option for Aussie viewers who are often left behind in the latest Kardashian bust-up.

The service will be simultaneously launched in Australia, the UK and Ireland, and will be available for a monthly subscription fee AUD$5.99 after a one-month free trial.

It will have a library of 3000 reality episodes on demand, including box sets of long-running TV shows.

Hayu may find its niche in disillusioned customers of existing streaming services like Netflix, which offer little in the way of reality content and instead focus on comedies and dramas.

It’s also cheaper than its contemporaries – Netflix has a base monthly rate of $8.99, Stan charges $10 a month and Presto costs $9.99 a month for its TV-only package.

Hayu will stream shows such as Shahs of SunsetI Am Cait, Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles, The Millionaire Matchmaker and Made in Chelsea.

Interestingly, many of these shows, including the highly popular Keeping Up with the Kardashians and all the various incarnations of The Real Housewives, have until now been available exclusively on Foxtel, which has a substantially higher subscription fee of $25 a month.

Hayu will also compete with Netflix, Stan and Presto, three services that already dominate Australian households.

In 2015, all-Australian streaming service OzFlix was also announced as a joint venture between film industry veterans Ron Brown and Alan Finney, with the aim of putting every Australian film ever made online.

Some of the quality content available on Hayu includes:

Keeping Up with the Kardashians

Made in Chelsea

Shahs of Sunset

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills
