Pop superstar Beyoncé surprised fans by dropping a new single and video clip just in time for Monday’s Superbowl 50.

The song, called ‘Formation’, addresses what it means to be a black woman, and features an adorable cameo from Beyoncé and Jay Z’s only child, Blue Ivy.

The three-year old wears a white, old-style dress with her natural afro in the clip, and can be seen running around and laughing with a number of other little girls.

It’s a rare appearance for Blue, who is usually fiercely protected by the notoriously private couple.

Beyoncé, who in the past has been criticised for not being a real feminist and not caring enough about the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, clearly stakes her views in the impassioned (and sometimes confusing) clip.

The video opens with the singer perched on a half-submerged police car in flood-ravaged New Orleans, and features imagery connected with both Hurricane Katrina and the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Lines from the song are likely to become popular Twitter fodder, including “When he f*** me good I’ll take his ass to Red Lobster”, “I just might be a black Bill Gates in the making” and “I got hot sauce in my bag”.

Beyoncé coincided the release of the film clip with a swathe of ‘Formation’-themed merchandise on her website, including tote bags with the phrase “I got hot sauce in my bag”.

The song and clip are available for free download and stream on Jay Z’s streaming service, Tidal.
