The Voice USA contestant dethrones Adele

A performance from a contestant on the US version of reality singing show The Voice has managed to knock Adele off the top of the US iTunes charts.

Jordan Smith’s rendition of iconic Queen song Somebody to Love on Monday night US time went viral immediately, rocketing up the Apple service’s chart instantaneously.

On Wednesday, the recording of Smith’s semi-finals performance scored so many downloads it managed to end Adele’s five-week reign at the top of the chart with her single Hello.

Along with a full gospel choir, Smith managed to do justice to Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury thanks to his high-pitched vocals and pitch-perfect falsetto.

“I don’t need to say anything at all because that’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” Smith’s coach Adam Levine said at the conclusion of the song.

The 21-year-old is the favourite to win the popular singing competition, which also counts Gwen Stefani, Pharrell and country star Blake Shelton amongst its high-profile coaches.
