Liam Hemsworth outsells brother Chris at box office

Chris Hemsworth was no match for his younger brother Liam at the Australian box office over the weekend.

Chris’s latest flick, In The Heart of The Sea, grossed $876,237 to finish fifth and a long way behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, which stars Liam.

For the third week in a row, the final instalment in The Hunger Games franchise was the most popular film, based on weekend takings.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 grossed $2.836 million to hold out the James Bond flick Spectre ($2.103 million), according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

The two blockbusters have been slugging it out for three weeks and 007 has had to settle for second each time.

Next best at the box office was Hotel Transylvania 2 ($1.478 million) while Creed ($1.230 million), a next generation version of the Rocky series, was fourth.

In The Heart Of The Sea, based on the sinking of the whaling ship Essex in 1820, which in turn inspired the novel Moby Dick, was one of only two newcomers to the top 10.

The other newcomer was Christmas comedy The Night Before, which stars Seth Rogen. It grossed $777,230 to land in sixth spot.

Aussie film The Dressmaker ($589,853), which also stars Chris Hemsworth, slipped two spots to seventh while Love The Coopers ($262,070) was eighth.

Rounding out the top 10 were Secret In Their Eyes ($116,816) and Bridge Of Spies, which, despite only taking $88,431, remained in 10th place.
