Brad and Angelina’s ‘vanity project’ slammed

Brad and Angelina’s first joint venture in a decade has been widely panned ahead of its release.

By the Sea may be the ultimate symbol of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Pitt’s partnership – both starred, while Angelina wrote and directed – but that hasn’t been the focus of film critics.

The film, which centres on a troubled couple’s last ditch attempt to repair their relationship with a seaside holiday, has been criticised particularly for its melodrama and slow pace.

Variety labelled the film an “unabashed vanity project”, while The Wrap called it a “soporific drama that teeters on parody”.

The Hollywood Reporter said the unremarkable film was unfortunate proof that “even the biggest names in the world won’t draw an audience to something that, in and of itself, has no reason for being.”

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Pitt got together on the set of the film Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005 and this is the first time they have collaborated since.

By the Sea was filmed in Malta just after the pair tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in France with their six children present.

Jolie Pitt was quick to brush off the subject matter’s relevance to her life with her husband, saying “the problems they have in the movie aren’t our specific problems”.

“I’m not saying that I’m the only woman Brad would ever look at, but I have a trust in him that he understands the value of family.”

It’s not surprising the Jolie Pitt’s want to distance themselves from the fictional couple, who are seen physically fighting, crying and abusing prescription drugs in the film’s trailer.

By the Sea will be released in late November.
