Bindi Irwin forced to prove her dad really is dead

Bindi Irwin’s stunning performances on a US dance show have hit a snag, after a judge ordered the teen to prove her father’s death to claim her pay.

Bindi has spent the past eight weeks shimmying her way through the 21st season of the US version of Dancing with the Stars.

According to TMZ, when lawyers submitted the 17-year-old’s DWTS contract to the Los Angeles Superior Court – required as she was still a minor – it was rejected after a judge wanted proof her parents had given up all rights to the money the teen would make on the show.

Her mother Terri reportedly relinquished her claim in writing, but the judge required the same from her deceased dad, Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.

Steve was killed in 2006 by a stingray’s barb while filming underwater documentary Ocean’s Deadliest. Lawyers must now prove he did in fact die.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, court documents showed Bindi was paid a significant amount for her DWTS appearance.

Guaranteed at least $US125,000 ($A175,000), as the teen progressed through the show, that figure grew, currently at about $US230,000 ($A322,000).

Having made it to week eight, she was contracted to receive an extra $US30,000 ($A42,000). If she made it to weeks 10 and 11, the teen will reportedly get $US50,000 ($A70,000) each week.

Bindi and dance partner Derek Hough were among the favourites to win the show.
