Australian tickets for the highly anticipated new Star Wars film will go on sale on Tuesday, almost two months in advance.

The Force Awakens, the seventh instalment in the series, will hit Australian cinemas on December 17, just in time to flood the Christmas and Boxing Day markets.

Tickets can be purchased through local distributor Hoyts, who are advertising Tuesday’s ticket release on its website.

The US market is also selling tickets early to generate hype for the film, with tickets going on sale on Monday, ahead of a December 18 release.

But some fans were left out in the cold with cinema companies’ websites crashing after being inundated.

For us Aussies, December 17 might feel light years away, but fans may be temporarily satiated with the release of the first full-length trailer, set for Tuesday, and the movie’s theatrical poster – which is viewable below.

As you can see, the poster features Star Wars characters – both new and old – although fans have noted Princess Leia’s lack of signature hair buns.

The artwork is a mash-up of key themes and stars, prompting speculation from fans who are excited about the latest instalment.

Rey, the spaceship parts scavenger dropped onto the desert planet Jakku and played by Daisy Ridley, was front and centre, riding the border between the light and dark sides of The Force.

Meanwhile, an orb hidden in the top corner of the image also piqued fans’ interest.

The Force Awakens showcases “an awakening of the dark side … and the light”, according to the official Star Wars website.

New villain Kylo Ren – played by Girls‘ Adam Driver – was given prime space on the poster, while Luke Skywalker did not get a guernsey.

It has been 10 years since the last Star Wars film graced the screens, with 2005’s Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The Force Awakens is the first film since Disney purchased franchise-owner LucasFilms for $4 billion in 2012, and will more than likely be the highest-grossing film of the year.

For those who can’t wait for the ticket-buying frenzy and full trailer release, take a look at these (very brief) teaser trailers below.
