Tom Hardy plays the dual roles of gangster twin brothers in his latest film Legend and it seems some of his character’s ferocity has rubbed off on him in real life.

Hardy was unhappy when a journalist asked him about his “ambiguous” sexuality during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

Graeme Coleman, who is a scribe for LGBT publication Daily Xtra, stumbled through a line of questioning about celebrities finding it hard to talk about their sexuality.

“In the film, your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality,” Coleman said. “But given interviews you’ve done in the past your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous.

“Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”

“What on earth are you on about?” Hardy replied.

Coleman then referred to an interview Hardy had done in 2008 where he alluded to possibly having had sex with a man. It was an interview he later clarified in 2011, telling Marie Claire his answers in the 2008 interview had been misconstrued and he had not had sexual encounters with men.

“Are you asking me about my sexuality?” he asked staring down the reporter.

“Umm, sure,” Coleman replied.

“Why?” Hardy retorts.

As Coleman struggled to respond, Hardy shut down the interview with two polite words: “Thank you.”

The Daily Xtra has clarified its line of questioning, with the Managing Editor writing: “As Canada’s gay and lesbian news source, we feel it’s our responsibility to examine sexuality and the ways in which it’s portrayed on screen, especially once it’s in the public eye.”
