In news that may sadden some, and put a spring in the step of others, actor Jon Hamm and girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt have officially announced their separation.

The couple, who have been together for almost 20 years, shared the news on Tuesday (Monday New York time) after months of speculation.

“With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history,” Hamm and Westfeldt said in a statement.

“We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward.”

Hamm, who melted the hearts of many in his role as Don Draper in Mad Men, recently went to rehab for an alcohol addiction and credited Westfeldt for her great support through his rehabilitation.

The 44-year-old is something of a romantic guru, having shared sage relationship advice with teenage girls in a video Q&A back in 2012.

His advice included: “Don’t go around trying to please guys, it’s impossible.”
