A White House representative has responded to Kanye West’s suggestion he will run for US president in 2020 during a lengthy speech at the MTV Video Music Awards yesterday (Sunday US time).

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest has welcomed West’s interest in the important gig, telling the Associated Press he is looking forward to “seeing what slogan he chooses to embroider on his campaign hat”.

The announcement was just one part of the 10-minute long acceptance speech West delivered after winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which included him admitting to taking drugs before hitting the stage.

“Two thousand and fifteen. I will die for the art, for what I believe in. The art ain’t always gonna be polite. Y’all might be thinking right now, ‘I wonder, did he smoke something before he came here?’ The answer is yes, I rolled up a little something to knock the edge off,” West said.

West concluded his speech with the political announcement, saying: “And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

As expected, West’s announcement elicited a massive response on social media, which included several memes imagining a future with West’s wife Kim Kardashian as the First Lady.
