The Voice Australia: the 10 best blind auditions

Four seasons since its massive debut on Australian television, The Voice has churned through the judges, created several homegrown stars and pulled massive ratings.

The show’s fourth season has been scoring upwards of two million viewers an episode and Sunday night’s instalment peaked at 3.053 million.

This is thanks in part to the presence of international star Jessie J, whose constant cat-fighting with Delta Goodrem is mercilessly teased in Channel Nine’s ads for the show.

Despite the compelling chemistry between the show’s five judges – Joel and Benji Madden, Delta Goodrem, Jessie J and Ricky Martin – this season has been decidedly lacking in “wow” moments.

To fill the void, we looked back over the 10 most memorable people to take the stage and turn some chairs.

10. Holly Tapp

The simplicity of Holly Tapp’s take on Adele’s song That’s It, I Quit, I’m Movin’ On was refreshing, but it was more the ensuing banter among the judges that made this audition one to remember.

Holly’s obvious gorgeousness was a huge drawcard for Joel, who fought and flirted shamelessly in an attempt to get her on his team.

The 22-year-old made it through to the semi-finals on team Joel and the costume and make-up department had a field day with her on every episode.

9. Kaity Dunstan

Young, bubbly and full of beans, 16-year-old Kaity Dunstan brought all the energy to the stage with her bouncy rendition of Brand New Key by Melanie.

It wasn’t all sugar-sweet, however, with the teenager’s unusual growl adding some extra oomph to her otherwise adorable performance.

8. Rachael Leahcar

Legally blind 18-year-old Rachael Leahcar had to be walked onto the stage for her audition in season one.

What she lacked in sight she made up for in vocals, delivering a rousing performance of Edith Piaf’s crowd pleaser La Vie En Rose.

“People are crying,” Joel said to his fellow judges. By the looks of the YouTube clip – which has more than six million views – Rachael’s performance still has impact.

7. Tim McCallum

There was not a dry eye in the house when Tim McCallum took to the stage in this season of the show with Puccini’s epic aria Nessun Dorma.

Wheelchair-bound since being dumped by a wave while at the beach, his ability to craft such a booming voice without the full use of his body was mind-blowing.

6. Danny Ross

In a sea of ballads and pop covers,  Danny Ross’s angsty rendition of Led Zeppelin’s When the Levee Breaks was a breath of fresh air.

With a snarl and his own guitar, Ross was clearly born to be a rockstar and you got the sense he was having too much fun on the stage to really care if anyone turned around.

They did turn around, however, and Danny made it to the finals with Joel as his coach.

5. Casey Withoos

It’s not clear what it was about Casey Withoos’ performance of Regina Spektor’s song Sampson that was so incredibly moving, but something in her wavering voice nearly brought Delta Goodrem to tears.

Withoos’ smiling face and gentle demeanour imbued the song with an added beauty.

Unfortunately, Withoos left Seal’s team after the battle rounds but her audition lives on on YouTube, where it has more than two million views.

4. Frank Lakoudis

It’s pretty hard to imagine someone singing the opening note of The Immigrant Song as well as Robert Plant. As just 22 years of age, Frank Lakoudis came pretty damn close.

That big voice landed him fourth spot in the show’s third season.

3. Harrison Craig

The little brother crying. The mother cheering. That damn voice.

We dare you not to get shivers watching Harrison Craig’s performance of the Josh Groban hit Broken Vow.

It wasn’t exactly rocket science to figure out that a then 18-year-old Harrison would go on to win the second season of the show.

The fact he learned to sing to combat a crippling stutter just made his performance all the more impressive.

2. Celia Pavey

Possibly the most charming of all Voice auditions, 19-year-old Celia Pavey took to the stage looking like a wood nymph, and that’s exactly how she sounded. Reaching every haunting height in her pitch-perfect rendition of Scarborough Fair, her performance was shiver-inducing.

Despite stuffing up the lyrics, the entire audition was delightful from start to finish.

1. Karise Eden

Way back in season one, Karise Eden showed us what The Voice was all about. From her opening line of It’s a Man’s World, she had every judge, audience member and viewer at home completely captivated.

Her difficult upbringing – she had a dysfunctional family and a habit of self-harming – only served to add to the poignancy of that first performance.

No one was surprised when Eden went on to win the first season by a mile. With that voice, how could she not?
