Young British actor Tom Holland has been chosen to star as the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man.

Holland, 19, will play Peter Parker (Spider-Man’s real-life alter ago) in the new trilogy of films.

Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman praised Holland in a statement, describing him as a “special” talent.

Great screen heroes – but there is something missing

“For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start,” Rothman told The Mirror.

Holland rose to fame in 2012 for his performance as one of Naomi Watts’s sons in Oscar-nominated tsunami film The Impossible.

Despite his age, Holland already has an impressive list of experience.

Away from Hollywood, he is perhaps best known for his role as Billy Elliot at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre.

The British actor made his first film appearance providing voice work in Arrietty five years ago, but has gone on to appear on the big and small screen.

The role of Peter Parker has been previously played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

Marvel and Sony also announced they had chose Jon Watts to direct the next Spider-Man, Vanity Fair reported.

Watts recently directed Cop Car, a thriller starring Kevin Bacon that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

The next Spider-Man film opens on July 28, 2017.
