A feature film commissioned by FIFA about its disgraced president Sepp Blatter has grossed just US$607 in its opening weekend at the US box office.

The poorly-timed United Passions hit cinemas just as the international governing body of football was rocked by accusations of corruption, forcing Blatter to resign from his post.

The film, which stars British actor Tim Roth as Blatter, tells the history of FIFA through the careers of three successive presidents: Jules Rimet, Joao Havelange, and Sepp Blatter.

It was primarily funded by the association, with FIFA contributing nearly all of its US$26.1 million budget.

“FIFA has contributed EUR 20 million ($22.2 million) to the film, the total cost of which is EUR 23.5 million ($26.1 million),” FIFA told CNN.

“The costs have come out of the budget of the 2014 World Cup, which is contained in the Financial Report 2009 and was approved by the 2010 FIFA Congress.”

Aside from abysmal box office figures, critics have panned the film, with the New York Times calling it “one of the most unwatchable films in recent memory, a dishonest bit of corporate-suite sanitizing that’s not good even for laughs”.
