Shopping can be a real chore for a lot of men and the thought of finding clothes that look amazing is often superseded by getting out of the shopping centre as quickly as possible.

But it doesn’t need to be so painful, it can actually be quite straightforward – all you need to do is keep things basic and know what it is you want.

They prove that being fashion-forward is pretty fuss-free when you stick to the basics and nail a few ace features.

Pep Guardiola, 44

Who is he? The retired football player-turned-legendary coach previously coached Barcelona and is currently at the helm of Bayern Munich.

Steal these moves: Just like in his time as a midfielder for Barcelona, Guardiola does the simple things very, very well. He shows men that looking good is actually pretty easy – neutral colours, tailored suits, well-cut shirts and snappy ties are really all you need.

He also knows how to change it up every now and then. See the splash of red in his sweater (above), the oversized scarf (below) or how he throws some jeans and a crisp white shirt together with classic Adidas Gazelle sneakers to finish it off.

You’ll need: A v-neck wool sweater (Uniqlo has some great ones), a fitted white shirt and a cashmere scarf.

Alessandro Squarzi, 50

Who is he? The owner and founder of Squarzi Showroom – a fashion house and consultancy company in Bologna, Italy.

Steal these moves: Squarzi has a typically flamboyant sense of Italian style but he pulls it off in a way that is understated and most importantly, very wearable.

For example, he pairs statement jackets – leather, bright trenches, double-breasted coats – with normal jeans or light coloured chinos and relaxed shoes. When it’s cold, layer a sweater underneath and you’ll stay warm but still look refined. His biker jacket look is particularly cool.

You’ll need: A leather biker jacket, some slim-cut chinos and a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses.

Brandon Flowers, 33

Who is he? The lead singer of The Killers and a father of three young boys.

Steal these moves: He may be a rock star but he’s also a family man, fitness fanatic and religious devotee, meaning partying isn’t the usual rock ‘n’ roll life factor.

Despite that, his fashion is absolutely killer (pun intended) and there are three very clear moves to steal from the 2008 GQ Man of the Year.

First is to wear a predominantly dark shirt with a light pattern under a black blazer. Second is to invest in a great denim jacket, it can be dressed down with any t-shirt or more slick looking with a button up. The third is how to tuxedo. See the picture, that’s how you tuxedo.

You’ll need: A bow tie, a patterned shirt and some hair gel.

Jimmy Fallon, 40

Who is he? A late night talk show host and comedian.

Steal these moves: If you’re in the market for a new suit to wear in the office, watching a few episodes of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon might be a good place to start.

While Guardiola’s suit style above is a simpler, muted look, Fallon gently adds colour into his outfits.

In the images below he rocks polka dots, a grey suit and a purple tie look and manages to look refined and classy at the same time.

John Slattery, 52

Who is he? A Hollywood actor best known for his role as Roger Sterling in Mad Men.

Steal these moves: All the credit for Mad Men‘s male sartorial excellence always went to Don (aka Jon Hamm), but Slattery as Roger Sterling was always just as sharp.

The glasses and white hair can sometimes make a person look less youthful but for Slattery they make his look a lot more vibrant.

Maybe that’s because he embraces the “silver fox” look and accentuates the grey hair with dark statement specs – whatever it is, it works.

Whether it’s a pinstriped suit, a cable-knit cardigan or a nautical blazer with gold buttons, Slattery makes clothes that sound dorky look contemporary by mixing them with well-selected shoes, shirts and ties.

You’ll need: A chunky knit jumper, some lace-up boots and a coloured blazer.
