Nicole Kidman’s Grace Kelly biopic, Grace of Monaco, has had a fairly diabolical journey from page to screen.

After months of terrible reviews and condemnation from Monaco’s royal family, the film made its straight-to-TV debut in the US on Monday.

Watching his movie screen on the Lifetime cable channel almost exactly a year after it was booed at Cannes, the film’s screenwriter felt the need to set the record straight.

Arash Amel took to Twitter during screening to defend his movie against critics and set the record straight on its troubled journey.

“The purpose of this live tweet is to correct the record, an explanation, an apology and most of all a bit of light hearted fun,” Amel began his rant, which lasted for the entire duration of the movie.

The tweets fluctuated between funny and sincere, with the screenwriter expressing his disdain over the film’s score and celebrating Nicole Kidman’s acting skills.

“Lesson for film grads: this is how you wash away what was actually a great performance in this scene with unnecessary music,” he wrote.

“Nicole was the best,” he added. “Terrific to work with on every level.”

The Welsh-born writer also had opinions on the length of the film, saying he felt the filmmakers let it run on too long.

The writer thanked his followers of watching the movie and his tweet stream, describing the experience as “cathartic”.

“Kept it tame tonight. I’ll keep people storming off set, 3-hour shooting days and missing sets for my memoirs,” he concluded.
