Is this the weirdest music trio ever?

In what might be a really unlikely combination, three musical giants have come together to create a mellow, campfire style melody.

Rihanna, Kanye West and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney have teamed up to produce FourFiveSeconds.

It’s a mellow affair featuring West and Rihanna duetting over laidback acoustic guitar and McCartney’s organ playing.

This follows on from a surprise collaboration by West and McCartney at the end of 2014, to release The Only One.

Rolling Stone reports this will be the first single off Rihanna’s upcoming, as-yet-untitled LP.

The song is available at Rhianna’s website and iTunes, but you can get a preview of the track below.

“With that much star power on one song, plus the campfire feel of the melody, they can afford to keep the music video simple, and that’s exactly the case here,” Rolling Stone reported.

“The Herb Ritts-esque black-and-white clip finds Rihanna and West just singing their collaborative track while McCartney strums the riff on an acoustic guitar, with the real highlight coming when the three musical titans share the same frame.”

While Rihanna’s rep told Rolling Stone that FourFiveSeconds would appear on both Rihanna and West’s upcoming new albums – Rihanna called the track “the first song my fans are going to hear from the new album”.

West was less forthcoming during a recent visit to Ellen.

“We’re still trying to find it. Trying to find the vibe,” West said of his new LP. “This transition from what I felt when I did Yeezus to what I feel now, and we’re just creating, so we haven’t found it yet.”

Track preview

The track was previewed at the iHeartRadio summit in Los Angeles, where West surprised the audience at the music industry conference with a speech about his career.

Billboard reports the rapper showed up with a laptop and proceeded to describe his “responsibility to innovate” and not to repeat himself musically.

He also discussed working with McCartney.

According to Billboard‘s witness: “He finished by playing one new song; a duet with Rihanna that featured acoustic guitar and a big, soaring chorus and melody with a massive hook.

“He then slammed his laptop shut and walked offstage to a standing ovation.”
