Ex-Neighbours star goes nude for feminism

Former Neighbours actress Caitlin Stasey has launched the new ‘feminist’ website Herself.com to combat anti-women cultural sentiments and champion female sexuality and solidarity.

Stasey, who currently appears on the historical drama Reign on Fox 8, and recently on Josh Thomas’s Please Like Me, set up the site as a place for women to talk about their thoughts on sexuality, feminism, contraception, marriage and masturbation.

Stasey, who conducted all of the interviews – even her own – says the site is space for women to “reclaim their bodies”.

Herself is a gesture to women for women by women; a chance to witness the female form in all its honesty without the burden of the male gaze, without the burden of appealing to anyone. These women are simply & courageously existing, immortalized within these photos,” Stasey says on the site.

While there are some positive messages being conveyed in the conversations, Stasey’s interview with herself at times blurs the lines between feminism and narcissism.

“When did you become aware of your gender? ‘It was always thrust upon me. I never had an awakening it was just understood that I was born cisgendered so there was never any turmoil over my sexuality or upset. I was given gender neutral toys but for the most part I opted for barbies, toy kitchens, lovely little dresses, the only truly non-gendered items I loved were art supplies …'”

Nevertheless, the 24-year-old Melbourne woman is passionate about empowering women to embrace their sexuality.

Stasey uses her own body to make bold statements, putting her money where her mouth is – and for this she has garnered a lot of support from young women around the world.

She posted a naked photo of herself on Instagram in early 2014, to promote the Free the Nipple social media campaign, and in a recent interview with Buzzfeed US, to promote Reign, she talked about freeing young women from the stigma of sex as not being anything other than positive.

“The more normal it is, the more it’s perceived as just an everyday way of being, the less scary it’s gonna be for girls, obviously,” Stasey told Buzzfeed.
