The ‘Bill Murray Story’, a website where regular people tell tales about their amazing encounters with the larger-than-life actor, paints a hilarious picture of the Hollywood funnyman.

Following the release of his latest comedy St. Vincent, we profile five of our favourite ‘real life’ stories from everyone’s favourite crazy uncle.

Deaf Assistant

During the making of Groundhog Day, Murray was going through a difficult divorce from his first wife and was proving a little tough to deal with.

The late Harold Ramis, relayed this story to Entertainment Weekly in 2012: “Bill had all these obvious resentments toward the production, so it was very hard for a time to communicate with him. Calls would go unreturned.

Production assistants couldn’t find him. So someone said, ‘Bill, you know, things would be easier if you had a personal assistant. Then we wouldn’t have to bother you with all this stuff.’ And he said, ‘Okay.’

So he hired a personal assistant who was profoundly deaf, did not have oral speech, spoke only American sign language, which Bill did not speak, nor did anyone else in the production.

But Bill said, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to learn sign language.’ And I think it was so inconvenient that in a couple weeks, he gave that up.

That’s anti-communication, you know? Let’s not talk.”

Party in St Andrews

Whilst attending a golf tournament in St Andrews, Scotland, Murray met some students, one of which, Lyke Stavnef, invited the actor to a house party and to he astonishment, he came.

“It was really funny because he was pretty old compared with all the other people there, but he was so relaxed and it was really amusing when he started to wash up,” Miss Stavnef said.

She was concerned that there were no clean glasses when she arrived with Murray but she said he was quite happy to drink vodka from a coffee cup.

“He couldn’t fail to have a good time,” she said.

Another student, Tom Wright, recalled: “The party was overflowing with stunning Scandinavian blondes. He seemed to be in his element, cracking lots of jokes. It was the talk of the town the next day.”

Golf Cart in Sweden

In August 2007, Murray was arrested by Swedish authorities when he was spotted driving a slow moving vehicle at 3:30am through the streets of Stockholm under the influence of alcohol.

Murray, who had been in town for a golf tournament, ‘borrowed’ the golf cart from his hotel and was headed for the trendy Café Opera nightclub, dropping off passengers along the way.

Murray explained later that at that time of year “it was a twilight ride, it’s no big deal”.

The Road House Calls

Murray’s best friend, Mitch Glazer, is married to actress Kelly Lynch, who starred as Patrick Swayze’s love interest in the 1989 film Road House.

Every time Road House is on, she explained to the AV Club in 2012, “he or one of his idiot brothers are watching TV— and they’re always watching TV — one of them calls and will say ‘Kelly’s having sex with Patrick Swayze right now. They’re doing it. He’s throwing her against the rocks'”.

Lynch said he even once called from Russia!

Poetry to construction workers

In 2010, Murray put in a surprise appearance at Poet’s House in New York City, wearing a hard hat, he recited the poetry of Emily Dickinson to a group of construction workers from sheets that he printed off from home – cracking jokes the whole time. The construction workers looked bemused.
