Oscar-winning actor George Clooney’s wife Amal Alamuddin has single-handedly reinvigorated old-school glamour into Hollywood and the world.

The 36-year-old British-Lebanese human rights lawyer has brought something not seen for generations – cultural gentility and utterly impeccable taste.

Like Grace Kelly, Diana Spencer, Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn, she has become an instant style icon.

From her Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen pre-wedding dresses, to her Oscar de la Renta bridal gown and her post-marital outfits from Stella McCartney and Giambattista Valli, Alamuddin embodied fashion à la mode.

It’s easy to compare Alamuddin and Clooney with the Kennedy’s fairytale marriage and all the romance of Camelot, thanks to the couple’s deep-seated Hollywood and political connections, but the bride’s intelligentsia upbringing, brilliance and Lebanese heritage gives her an exotic beauty not seen since the Grecian-US opera diva Maria Callas in the 1950s and 1960s.

And while Callas was devastatingly wounded by her Greek billionaire lover Aristotle Onassis, who eventually left her for the widowed, and equally chic and contemporary, Kennedy, it was the singer’s magnanimous talent and original style that have been her legacy.

This past weekend, watching Alamuddin strut and glide through Venice during her four-day wedding extravaganza to Clooney, 53, was nothing short of show stopping – this was her moment to shine and she was ready.

Like Kennedy, Callas and Spencer before her, Alamuddin has outshone any Hollywood star.

But in contrast to her fashion and cultural foremothers, she has nothing to prove, no awards to win or politics to play – she is a formidable businesswoman in her own right.

There was something so striking about a woman in complete control of all her surroundings and every single ensemble was made for her – unlike the publicity promotions the public is constantly subjected to on red carpets.

She has gone from being not just a beautiful, incredibly clever barrister, but to also the most glamorous woman in the world, all with four outfits and some excellent choices of transport.

Here’s how she did it.

Day 1 – Friday, September 26, 2014

Arrival

Clooney and Alamuddin marked their arrival in Venice in a vintage, wooden water taxi, the ‘Amore’, waiting to whisk them to the luxury Cipriani Hotel.

Alamuddin’s choice of a monochrome striped Dolce & Gabbana floor ankle-length gown, coupled with Prada sunglasses, matching kitten heels and a fabulous blow-wave, was perfect – she looked like summer.

While the boats were so very Venice, the photos of her walking hand-in-hand with her fiancee, carrying a white hatbox emblazoned with their A & G monogram, was something out of a George Cukor movie.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford, who shared the couple’s boat, somehow managed to resemble a dowdy cousin in comparison. Choosing to go make-up free in a faded denim jacket, Crawford clearly did not comprehend that she was about to be part of fashion history.

The photos will live to tell that tale.

Dinner

Several hours after their spectacular arrival, Clooney and Alamuddin were seen going to their separate pre-wedding dinners.

This time, Alamuddin, was dressed in a red-and-black floral Alexander McQueen gown, with an asymmetrical hemline complete with train, that showed off her long legs.

After months of keeping a very low profile and being watched for every fashion faux pas, she had the world’s media eating out of her hand.

Day 2 – Saturday, September 27, 2014

Wedding day

People and Hello magazines released the first images of Alumaddin in her lace Oscar de la Renta gown and Clooney in his Armani tux and they looked every bit as as sophisticated as expected.

People described the dress as a “French lace wedding gown, hand-embroidered with pearls and diamanté accents, featuring an off-the-shoulder neckline and a full circular train”.

“He’s such an elegant designer and such an elegant man,” Alamuddin told the magazine.

Day 3 – Sunday, September 28, 2014

Morning after

Alamuddin appeared in a a state of marital bliss to show off her wedding ring and her happiness.

For her first post-wedding appearance, she chose another short and asymmetric gown – this time, though, she was in white.

Her couture Giambattista Valli lace gown was utterly contemporary, with mini hemline and floral overlay.

George again wore Armani, as he had for all the wedding’s major events.

Day 4 – Monday, September 29, 2014

Civil ceremony

For their final official wedding engagement, a civil ceremony, Alamuddin again stunned, this time in a cream Stella McCartney summer pant suit, with a cropped navy-trimmed shell top.

She finished the ensemble with a wide-brimmed, white hat, not dissimilar to the headwear worn by Mick Jagger’s former bride Bianca Jagger in 1971.

While all her other costumes were exquisite, the uncomplicated suit seemed to be the one that captured the world’s attention, with the world’s fashion critics completely dazzled.

Following their civil service, the newlyweds were whisked back to the airport and were believed to be headed to London before their honeymoon.
