Sarah Hyland, star of hit television series Modern Family, has taken out a restraining order on her ex-boyfriend Matthew Prokop, alleging that he abused her and threatened her life.

Modern Family star groped, man arrested and charged

According to TMZ, the 23-year-old claimed in court documents that she feared for her life when Prokop shoved her against a car and choked her during a May argument.

“His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life,” the actress said in court.

Hyland then reportedly sought help from her costar and onscreen mother Julie Bowen, who intervened to “peacefully end the relationship”.

Following the end of their five-year relationship, Hyland claimed she was “relentlessly bombarded” with “vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails” from Prokop, including threats of his own suicide.

The young star added that her former boyfriend also told her he would set fire to one of her homes and prevent her from ever seeing her dog again.

Prokop, who has appeared alongside Hyland in an episode of Modern Family, entered rehab in August.

Upon his September release, the director of the rehab facility allegedly reached out to Hyland, advising her to take out a restraining order against him.

Hyland’s attorney, Lee A. Sherman, told People magazine the actress would not comment further on the matter.

“Out of respect for the court, the process and all parties, I have advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter,” Sherman said.
