· Can you tell when actors are acting or being real?

The return of the heavy hitters

The Golden Globe and SAG nominations for best actress demonstrate a return to the older, much celebrated actresses whose careers have gone from strength to strength since they started. Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep all feature, none of them younger than 38 and all boasting repertoires as varied as they are successful. We love the Jennifer Lawrences and Greta Gerwigs of the world, but there’s no harm in giving due credit to those who have been there for the long haul.

The new league of red carpet stars

Lea Seydoux: The young actress isn’t afraid to take risks and she has effortless French attitude that allows her to carry anything off. Let’s hope this translates to the high-glamour red carpet.

Lupita Nyong’o: The breakout style star of the year, Nyong’o hasn’t put a foot wrong while promoting 12 Years a Slave. Red carpet is where she thrives and we’re praying she chooses one of her signature bright colours for her big night (she’s nominated for a Golden Globe for best supporting actress).

Suki Waterhouse: The 22 year-old British model, and girlfriend of Bradley Cooper, would bring some serious English quirkiness to Hollywood. Her off-kilter, messy look would look great with a bit of polish.

Adele Exarchopoulos: Her performance in Blue is the Warmest Colour alongside Lea Seydoux has been widely celebrated by critics and the 20 year-old is still fairly new to the red carpet. She’s a little bit rough around the edges too which will provide a nice contrast to the rest of the stars.

Melonie Diaz: She was dressed down in this year’s Cannes favourite Fruitvale Station, but when Diaz hits the carpet she is sleek and ladylike.

Celebrity dates

Almost as important as the choice of tux or gown is the selection of arm candy for a star. What better time to take a relationship public than when the eyes of the world are firmly fixed on you? Here are the couples we hope take the red carpet plunge:

Bradley Cooper and Suki Waterhouse: We know they’re a couple, but Cooper, 39, and his 22 year-old girlfriend are notoriously low-key with their relationship. Last year the actor took his mother as his date so, this year, we are hoping he steps it up and brings his stylish girlfriend instead.

Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult: The on-again off-again couple have spent lots of time together recently, suggesting that they are once again more than just friends. Both are incredibly talented young stars with bundles of red carpet cred.

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn: They have holidayed in Hawaii together and rumours are rife that the two are getting hot and heavy. They could be just friends, but if it’s anything more the A-listers will have the perfect chance to confirm it at the Globes or the Oscars.

Robin Wright and Ben Foster: There’s a 14 year age gap, but that didn’t stop Wright and Foster from getting engaged in December 2013. Wright, who is the older member of the coupling, bravely put herself back on the dating scene after a tumultuous 20 year marriage to Sean Penn and it certainly paid off. We would love to see these two lovebirds face off on the red carpet with Penn and his rumoured new ladylove, Charlize Theron.

The reemergence of Cate Blanchett

Ok, so she never really left, but it has been a little while since Blanchett attended an awards show as a best actress nominee. A big chance to take home the top gong Oscar for her performance in Blue Jasmine, we will once again get the chance to see this stunner in all her couture glory.

Stellar music performances

Who can forget Adele’s breathtaking performance of her Oscar-winning Bond theme song Skyfall at last year’s Academy Awards? This year, two monoliths go head to head with the Golden Globe nomination of Coldplay for Atlas from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and U2 for Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. If both were to perform consecutively at the Academy Awards it would raise the roof and possibly ignite an old school boy band battle.

The Aussie brigade

With Cate Blanchett leading the pack, other Australian actors like Margot Robbie, Geoffrey Rush and Chris Hemsworth have had a strong year. The Aussies have well and truly earned their place in the spotlight.
